Huang Ruo (1976) was born on China’s Hainan Island, where he was taught piano and composition by his father from the age of six. At 12, he began studying composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he learned to combine Eastern and Western influences. He developed his own style that transcends traditional boundaries and creates a compelling synthesis.
In 1995, Huang won the Henry Mancini Award, after which he continued his studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School in the US. His music is performed worldwide by top ensembles such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, ASKO Ensemble and Nieuw Ensemble. He has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ.
Praised by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, Huang continues to innovate. He is working on major projects such as a cello concerto for Jian Wang and collaborations with the New York Philharmonic. Besides composing, he gives lectures and master classes worldwide and continues to explore new musical frontiers from his home in the US.
A few days before the world premiere of Between Two Lights, he will stop by the HERMESstudio, where he will perform a full-length chamber music concert with HERMESensemble.
